Trans fats (trans fatty acids) are artificially produced fats that are very bad for your health. The consumption of trans fats is the main cause for the present day obesity epidemic. Trans fats are used in thousands of food products.

The health risks of trans fats are obesity, cancer, clogging of the arteries, birth defects, diabetes, high cholesterol, hart disease, allergies in children, etc.

When you eat normal fats, the body metabolizes half of them in 18 days. When you eat trans fats the body requires 51 days to metabolize half of them. This means that half of the trans fats you eat today will still be inhibiting essential enzyme systems in your body 51 days from now! No wonder obesity is such a problem.

The food industry uses hydrogenated (or partially hydrogenated) oils because it increases the shelf life of food products. There is less spoilage, less loss and subsequently more profit! In addition, products with trans fat tend to taste very good. Trans fats are used in fast food, chips, baked goods, french fries, etc.

Trans fats are produced in factories through the hydrogenation of fluid vegetable oils such as sunflower oil, soybean oil, etc. During this chemical process hydrogen molecules are added to the oil molecules. Through the hydrogenation oils become solid as in margarine.

Food products contain trans fat if they include any of the following ingredients: hydrogenated oil, partially hydrogenated oil, hydrogenated fat, partially hydrogenated fat, shortening, margarine. Butter contains a small amount of natural trans fat, but in small quantities this is not harmful.

Consumers have repeatedly been warned about the health effects of saturated fats, especially saturated animal fats which are not healthy. Trans fats however are much worse.

The best oil for frying and cooking is coconut oil because it remains very stable under high temperatures and does not break down into carcogenic compounds, as unsaturated oils like olive oil do. Coconut remains stable because it has a very high content of saturated oils. Not all saturated oils are bad for you even though that is what the food industry and the main stream media have been telling you all these years.

Tips for lowering your trans fat intake:

1. Choose liquid vegetable oils, or choose a soft tub margarine that contains little or no trans fats.

2. Avoid eating commercially prepared baked foods such as cookies, pies, donuts, snack foods and processed foods, including fast foods. To be on the safe side, assume that all such products contain trans fats unless they are labeled otherwise.

3. When foods containing partially hydrogenated oils can't be avoided, choose products that list the partially hydrogenated oils near the end of the ingredient list.

4. To avoid trans fats in restaurants, stay away from desserts and deep-fried foods, as many restaurants still use partially hydrogenated oils in their fryers.
