Uveitis is a complex condition that can lead to blindness. The video shows a tragic case of Uveitis that led to blindness. At 17-years of age, Helen (not her real name) developed what seemed to be just a simple "pink eye" and was treated with antibiotic drops. Her condition progressed. When she consulted me at age 19, she was totally blind. She had hoped that I would some how diagnose her properly and restore her vision. She was treated for Tuberculosis because of a strongly positive TB skin test. Her Uveitis, however, may have been due to another disease process, yet unknown. This patient's Uveitis involves her entire uveal tracts, iris, ciliary body and choroids. Most cases of Uveitis involve the anterior structures of the eye and are called Anterior Uveitis (IRITIS or IRIDOCYCLITIS) and corticosteroids can be eyesight saving.
Anterior Uveitis is commonly due to allergic conjunctivitis. Anterior Uveitis can be caused by Sarcoidosis, Herpes, Cytomegalovirus, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Reiter's syndrome, Behcet's disease and is often associated with herpes infections, syphilis, Lyme disease, Tuberculosis and Leprosy. Posterior Uveitis may be caused by autoimmune disorders, Toxoplasmosis, Onchocerciasis, Cysticercosis, Toxocariasis, Histoplasmosis, Coccidioidomycosis (San Joaquin Valley fever) and other conditions. Most often, the original cause of panuveitis remains unknown. The student of medicine should read each individual cause because some of these conditions can be avoided by properly educating our patients and by avoiding certain animals or their secretions.
Anterior Uveitis is unusually common, and I follow many of these patients since they're uninsured and they cannot afford the ophthalmologist. If we were to enact a law whereby the uninsured would only be charged what regular Medicare allows plus 10%, we would save a lot of eyes and lives. At present, we have too many ophthalmologists and the uninsured or "cash patient" often pays 5 to 10 times what regular Medicare allows. Is it fair?
Returning to Helen, the blind patient with panuveitis, I'd like to discuss Man's bestiality. When she became blind at 17, an older man was very friendly and helpful to her and she thought he loved her. As soon as this man got Helen pregnant, he vanished. What kind of society do we have that allow so many men to engender life so readily without any responsibility? Today, in the United States, 50% of children are born to single mothers.
Deadbeat dads are not only harming their biological children, they are destroying our way of life. Man is driven by sex, not loving. Children that are abandoned must be educated so that they don't do to others what has been done to them. Sex education is an essential curriculum-it must be taught early.
Helen's boy is now 3-years-old, and I enjoy seeing him. I have never charged Helen or her boy for my medical care. Last week she came, and I was impressed on how well she is caring for her independent little boy. This is what makes Medicine a joy-the human spirit that refuses to accept defeat.
A "pink eye" may not be as simple as you think. The video will be informative, and I hope that it helps you save an eye. Medicine should not be managed by "investors" that know nothing about medicine. The inferior mind seeks profit; the superior mind seeks righteousness and wisdom.
